Differences: first edition, first printing, first issue, first state

For those who would like to know more about the difference between a first edition, first printing, first issue, and first state, the first two articles below are informative.

The first is "The New Antiquarian", a blog of the Antiquarian Bookseller's Association of America. The article was written by John Schulman who is co-owner of Caliban Book Shop along with his wife Emily Hetzel. They have operated a general used and rare bookstore in Pittsburgh since 1991. Can't say that I passed the quiz but I did get a number correct based on info that I have learned from many of the pre-internet bookdealers and book collectors who came before me.

What’s the difference between a first edition, first printing, first issue, and first state? Pay attention, there will be a quiz!

This second article was published by the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers and is an article written by Allen and Patricia Ahearn, owners of Quill & Brush (Middletown, MD) which was established in 1976. The Ahearn's started collecting and cataloging books in the early 1960s. Quill & Brush specializes in First Editions as well as collectible books. Many of us are familiar with the Ahearns and own copies of their books.

"Allen and Pat Ahearn are the authors of Collected Books: The Guide to Values (4th, revised and enlarged edition published in 2011), Book Collecting 2000 (Putnam: 2000) and over 200 individual Author Price Guides, all of which require they keep current on the market prices for collectible books and make them uniquely qualified to offer professional appraisal services and to establish fair prices when purchasing books or libraries."

Sadly, Patricia Ahearn died in May of 2014. This link will take you to a short article by Nicholas Basbanes, another name known to many of us, that was published in "Fine Books and Collections."
