"xx number of people are watching this" message

Some listings say in the ad "xx number of people are watching this".  Sometimes I see that same

thing in items in my watchlist, but not ALL items.  It's an obvious psychological motivator.

I've looked and I don't see that it's an eBay service.  Is it a feature of one of those monthly cost

marketing plans that eBay offers?

No.  People are actually watching those items.  Not a service, no fee, just people putting items on their watch lists.

I have watchers on one quarter of my items for sale.  Most will never buy.

eBay only displays that message if a certain threshold number of watchers is met, or if eBay calculates that such a message might result in increased sales compared to alternative messages.
