how do i use a gift credit card to purchase an item particularly when my name isn't on the card because its a gift card

You can not use any gift card other than an eBay gift card through eBay checkout.

You can add the gift card to your PayPal account, if you have one, then make it your preferred payment method there. Then select PayPal at eBay checkout.
