email from potential buyer

I am fairly new on eBay.  I recently was emailed a request from a potential buyer to purchase an item I was selling at the listing price + shipping long before the item was due to expire.  I responded by saying that I just listed the item and was not comfortable doing that.  I don't know how to handle requests like that.    Could someone please advise.

You handled it just fine.  You have no obligation to end an auction early so a user may purchase the item.  Many times they do this because they feel the item will go for more money and they want to buy it cheap.

I just received two (2) not so nice emails from this same person who did not get my item when the listing was over.  I did sell it to someone else and there were several bidders.  Figure I should not reply/respond.  Agree??

So that buyer wanted to pay less than what the item ended up as, and now he is upset because you didn't sell it to him earlier.  I wouldn't reply.  Due to his 2 unpleasant emails, I might add his user ID to the blocked buyers list.
