Trying to change my email to a currently used GMAIL address as my old email is from an old provider. In the process I am told the email address is already taken ? Then I am informed the account that is supported by that address will have to be closed . I only have one account. I am puzzled

You have more than one eBay account, apparently.

Each eBay account needs a unique email address. If your gmail address is linked to a different eBay account, you must provide a different email address for this account.

Try signing in to the other eBay account using the gmail address as your username. If you close the account with the gmail address you may be able to use the gmail address with your remaining account, though you may have to wait thirty days or more to do so.
