Then allow me to add to your learning. On this page Buyer Management | eBay near the bottom is a check box (green arrow pic below) that requires Buyers to provide a payment method as part of the Offer process. It is one tool eBay provides to help avoid what you were afraid might happen.
Additionally, if a Buyer does not pay in 4 days then on day 5 you can Cancel the transaction using the reason Buyer hasn't paid. The Buyer gets an Unpaid item strike on their account which takes 12 months to roll off. If they get 2 they will have trouble buying on eBay.
And finally, here is a link to the eBay Seller protections: Seller protections | eBay

-What do you mean you Ended the sale? Do you mean an auction with bids on it? Fees may apply in that case: Ending a listing | eBay
-When you say "very little info available" what do you mean? Like they have (0) Feedback? That is no reason to end a transaction.
-What kind of an item was it?
-You are a new Seller so yes, on some levels you will be a target for scammers but here is a link to Seller protections, some will apply to your Seller level: Seller protections | eBay

I see a $400 item sold on April 17. What reason did you select for cancelling the transaction? If it was for Out of stock, ebay recorded a defect on your account. Too many defects and you can be restricted or suspended.
