cancel and return

i purchased an item, the item had a deliver by date and was late i aske the seller to cancel and was told to not open the package and simply print RTS (return to sender)  on package and send back. i was given a tracking #  ans gave it to the seller , now it seems the package was possibly lost who is responsible its a big hassel to file a claim this is usps
