Why do the number of items for sale change when "sort" is changed? For example, if I type "used knit hats" into eB's home page search window this will show 84,000 UKHs for sale when sorting is "best match". But when sorting is changed from best match to "price + shipping: lowest first", the 84,000 is reduced to 2,000 UKHs for sale. And when sorting is changed to "price + shipping: highest first", the number of listed items increases to 79,000. It should be 84,000 regardless of how they are sorted. No?? This also happens with listings for titanium bicycles, electronics, CDs and electric shavers; maybe everything. When sorting is set to 'lowest first' this always produces the lowest number of items listed for a category.

The "Price plus shipping: lowest first" sort is "streamlined" or filtered.
There should be a link at the top of the results to "See more results", but that link may not always appear.
If you want to see all results, avoid using the "lowest first" sort order as your default sort order.

Thanks, i will try that. Another workaround for viewing lowest prices first is to sort for "price: highest first" and then view the items starting from last to first.

You are most welcome.
Using the "highest price" sort and starting at the bottom is a great workaround, particularly if you use the price range to limit the results.
If you have saved searches that you still want to sort by "lowest first", you can avoid the filtering by adding the following parameter to the end of the search URL, then save the new search and unsave the old search:
