What does "open box" mean?

I recently bought an item that stated it was "open box". I thought that meant that the box had been opened but the item was like new and not used yet.  What would your thoughts be on this?

What does "open box" mean?

It was a Nutrimill Grinder.  I understood it to mean unused but I found a bunch of flour in it and it smelled bad.  I emailed the seller and he told me...  "Open box means you have to open it & test it out before you sell it. So I made sure it works before you got it."

I was pretty sure I was getting a new, unused item but that the box had been opened.  It did not come with the original box either.

eBay has a Condition Guide for every category. Several categories allow the Seller to chose "open box" for the condition, but what that means varies by the category.

What was the item?

What does "open box" mean?

@ryzebol

For Home and Garden items, "Open Box" means":

The item is in excellent, new condition with no wear. The item may be missing the original packaging or protective wrapping, or it may be in the original packaging but not sealed. The item includes original accessories. The item may be a factory second. See the seller's listing for full details and a description."

According to eBay's explanation then, it would be okay for it not to be in the original packaging, but it does not sound like it arrived new with no wear. If you are unhappy with your purchase and feel it is not as described in the listing, you have 30 days after delivery to open an Item Not as Described case.

You would go to your Purchases to open the case. The Seller is required by eBay to respond to the case in three business day with a workable solution. They could offer a partial refund or require you to return it for a refund. If they require a return, they need to pay for return shipping. If you have any further questions, please respond to this post.
