This forum is for questions about eBay, specifically.

That said, your friend may just need to update sound drivers or change some settings.

See here:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/optiplex-790/drivers

Also worth trying: switch from using the audio output on the back of the computer to the one on the front (or vice versa). I had a Dell Optiplex that only worked when using the front panel jack.

If your friend does wind up needing a sound card, what card you can use will depend on the exact form factor of the Dell computer -- Minitower, Desktop or Small Form Factor.

He is using an expensive Bose Speakers, they have a white and red plugs that go into the back on the speakers and the other two black wires go to the back of the Optiplex 790  I don't see holes in the front of his pc except 1 for the earphones and one for the microphone.  where can he plug them into the front?

btw, I bought a cheap set of speakers that do plug into the front and they did not work, it had a usb and a plug in for headphones, but they worked on my pc great. Please let me know what you think and Thanks

The audio out for a Dell Optiplex is a stereo 3.5mm jack that accepts a 3.5mm stereo plug like a headphone plug. There is one jack on the back -- usually with a green outline, and also one jack on the front typically used for headphones.

Ok Thanks, I will try it when next time I visit him, meanwhile how do I go about finding out exactly what kind of sound card is in his dell? Just in case it is needed? Thanks

Dell Optiplexes have sound built in; if your friend is using a sound card you will likely have to open up the computer to see exactly what kind it is.

If your friend has a video card installed, he may need to reinstall the drivers for it if it is not working.

what is confusing me is, I do think his sound is built in (integrated) but does that mean we can still change  the built in sound card or not?

His video is just great.

Btw, when we go to right hand corner and right click on the sound icon then go to Sound, then Playback, it does not have the speakers in there like it used too, even though the speakers are hooked up to the pc!  This is most likely why we are getting "No Audio Imput Device found!  Why is it not being found when they are plugged in? Thanks

It is certainly possible to add a sound card and bypass the integrated audio.

But the problem may simply be an issue with driver software; reinstalling the audio driver or changing the settings can often solve similar problems when audio stops working immediately after an update.

Without the proper audio driver installed, the hardware may not work or even be recognized by the system. The proper driver is necessary to tell the computer what to do with the audio signal.

Your friend should try reinstalling that Realtek Audio driver (DRVR_WIN_R289789.EXE) found at the link above before getting a new sound card -- assuming he is using Windows.
