Hello, thus far in my many years on eBay, I have been only a Buyer, not a Seller. I wish to say that making AI available to Sellers has been one of the most egregious mistakes eBay has made in a very long time. Many, many sellers are using the AI function, and, as a result, nothing but generalist drivel is being offered by AI, and thus by sellers. Truly, there is precious little in these AI outputs that we buyers find meaningful or useful or even true! They’re also terribly and unhelpfully predictable.
I would point your attention to an excellent commentary in today’s NY Times (3-29-24), entitled “A.I.-Generated Garbage Is Polluting Our Culture.” It’s written by a neuroscientist. I would strongly advise that the eBay community, including eBay management, read and consider the powerful argument in this article.
The title describes exactly how I feel about AI-generated descriptions of items on eBay: Garbage. These descriptions are not only dumbing down the eBay experience, they’re fostering misinformation and, at times, downright falsehoods about the items being sold. Just think about it: how could AI possibly “know” the individual characteristics and flaws or features of a specific USED item?! As I’ve said, AI mainly deals in very unhelpful generalizations—unhelpful to this particular item being sold under these particular circumstances. Please, go back to insisting that sellers write their own particular descriptions for each item. They may need help of some kind, but they—and eBay—don’t need this AI-type of help. We buyers want and need helpful, item-specific info that only the seller knows. For the good of the community, please banish AI. At this point in its development, it IS garbage.

I agree. It is lazy. A seller should have the item in their hand, feel it, describe it and tell the buyer about it. Too many cases will be opened because of an inaccurate description. I see nothing but problems.
