Tracking large (9 x 12 inch) first class envelope

My item was listed for First Class USPS service and the buyer was charged the correct amount for a 9 x 12 inch envelope.   My system would not recognize the selected service and wanted to print out as a Ground Advantage package.   Went to Post Office to send as First Class Mail but they said no tracking number is provided for that.

What should I have done to get a tracking number printed off with a proper mailing label?

First class package service no longer exists, as it was renamed Ground Advantage.  There is tracking if you ship as a package.  Shipping in a stamped envelope has no tracking.
