Shipped an item with prepaid label. It’s been over a week. No updated information. Post office told me to come back after ten business days. Realistically I think the package was stolen or misplaced. What should I say to the buyer and what’s the most probably outcome for both parties.

No scans at all - did you get one when you first mailed it?
I've never had a USPS package stolen or misplaced, just very late at times.
Did you submit a Help Request on usps.com - that will shake it loose sometimes.

Also enter the tracking in their Search tool, then enter your email to receive update notices - that can work too.
