Seller misadvertised carat

Hi there
I received this 18K earings and as I do usually, took for testing. The jeweller tested the studs , as well as the main gold detailing over the malachite stone. He conducted the test twice on each location whilst I watched. The earring studs tested for 18 karat gold but main section test only 9 karat! I emailed the seller and informed but they argued my testing was faulty. They offered a refund but want me to return item without insurance cover. What happens if item is lost and uninsured? Will the seller be still legally liable to refund me, because they currently do not want to ay for insured postage back and the item cost several hundred dollars.
