It depends on what type of listing it is. An auction runs for a set number of days, usually 5 or 7 depending on what you select. It can automatically re relisted for up to 8 times until it sells.
Fixed price items - buy it now only - stay up until the item sells, or until you cancel them. They are called good 'til cancelled.
