Large increase in post office rates

Recently I have had a problem with postage fees for my sent packages.  An example was the calculator for the buyer on my listing had $8.65 but when I tried to mail it it was $73.00.  Even the postal worker was shocked.  The package was going to Los Angeles and weighed 2.5 pounds.  What is the problem?

To California from where?  What were the dimensions of the box?  That makes a big difference.
