I was given a discount code but Ebay did not apply it when i ordered.

I was given a discount code of $5 dollars for my next purchase, even though the check box with the code was checked at check out it was not applied. I also tried to enter it manually but could not check out until i removed and just used the check box. Recently i was send a few of these but at check out they were not honored , can Ebay explain this ?
