You can't. However you are required to pay for the item if your offer is accepted. You decide how you want to pay when you make the offer should it be accepted. What is the objection?
I can see why non-payers wouldn't like this, but that's why eBay put it in - to stop buyers who make offers and then don't pay.

I always pay promptly. When they forced the auto pay upon me; I was asked what method to use for the payment. I selected PayPal. However; the amount is directly withdrawn from my financial institution. Not thru PayPal as instructed. I have an untarnished history. I do not desire to have a direct withdrawal, therefore I have been forced to stop utilizing the offer feature. Resulting in my making fewer purchases than desired.

What is your default payment option set to in PayPal? Sounds like you need to edit that.

The problem with auto pay on offers appears to be you can't combine purchases before payment. Is there a workaround for this?

I am not aware of a workaround for that. The seller could refund the shipping/handling over-payment for combined purchases after the fact if he is willing.
