Customer bought the wrong item -- 194272708134 -- and started the return by saying the part was defective. He's willing to change that reason to "bought the wrong item" -- how do we do that?

The reason can not be changed. If the buyer is willing to pay for the shipping, you can ask for his email address, and send him a paypal invoice for the return shipping, and the original shipping that you will have to refund.

Thanks for the info. I don't mind paying the return postage and giving the full refund, but I don't want to get dinged or have my item dinged because the customer bought the wrong item.
Oh and ..... Since when can you ask for a customer's email address? Isn't that against eBay rules?
Thanks again for taking the time to reply. This saves me from wasting time trying to get the reason changed.

You can exchange contact info when you have a transaction together. Managed payments doesn't have an ad hoc invoice function like paypal, so it is accepted that there are times when there is no other way to handle an issue other than paypal.
There is no way to remove the NAD label from the return, but if it causes you to move to a very high rating on returns, it might be possible to get it adjusted. They will not look at it unless it will cause a change in status.
