Fixed price listings have a single duration - good til canceled - they run continuously until sold or canceled. But they do roll over every month for bookkeeping purposes so that insertion fees are billed each month.
Auction listings are typically 7 to 10 days, although you can select a shorter duration when creating the listing. You can't change the duration after the auction is running. eBay also provides the option to relist an auction up to 8 times if it doesn't sell. To end that relist cycle, the seller would need to end the auction.
