Does a return need to be closed to receive a partial refund from seller

I received defective order. Seller says I need to close return for them to be able to send partial refund. But it says if I close return I won’t be able to reopen a case. So what happens if I close return and then don’t receive refund? I only open return because we couldn’t seem to agree on a resolution, but now we have. Is there a recourse available if this happens? Does the return need to be closed for the buyer to send partial refund.? Thanks in advance

No.  The seller can issue a refund partial or whole with the case open.   Beware, this seller may be trying to trick you.

Hi @boyerjohn_68

Once you start the return process YOU are given "X" amount of time to return the item.  If you close the claim then you are finished with the transaction and the Seller has no obligation to do anything further.

Message the Seller back and let them know this:  if the Partial refund comes through prior to you needing to ship the item back you will close the claim, if not then the item will be returned.  Then wait.

If you miss the window to return the item per the claim the Seller can close it on their end and not refund you anything.

The seller was insinuating it would take a lot of time and cost ME a lot of money. As the sellers return policy states buyers are responsible for return cost. The items are defective 100%. I’m thinking it’s probably in my best interest to ask EBay to step in. It’s around $400 I paid. Please advise. Thanks

@boyerjohn_68   If the item was set for Buyer pays return shipping and that is how you purchased it then if you return it you will pay the shipping.  That part is pretty clear.  It is not time to ask eBay to step in ... if the return claim was Item not as described, meaning the item was stated to be working and it isn't then the Seller would have to pay the return shipping.  However, if you started one claim type you cannot end it and start another one.

Asking eBay to step in is done when one or the other part fails their part of the return ... in this case if you return the item and the Seller does not refund you in their allotted few days (they are given 2 days if memory serves) THEN you ask eBay to step in and force the refund.

Also, you do NOT need to be messaging with the Seller right now if you sent the message I suggested up thread ... they either partially refund you or they don't and you return the item.

Do not close the return. The seller is scamming you. When you open a case of item not as described, the seller pays for return shipping. If you don't receive a prepaid shipping label within 3 business days of opening the return, go back to it and use the option for eBay to step in.
