Creating a listing with variations

I am trying to sell socks that are mostly the same but have some different variations. I have 2 different materials (wool blend and cotton), 2 different weights (mid weight and heavy weight), and various colors. I have spent the last 3 hours trying to figure out how to create a listing where people can click on a material, weight, or color they want, and have the correct pictures come up.

Under the "various combinations" section, every time I try to make a new combination, every combination ends up resorting to the exact same photo. I've tried clicking on different pictures while I make the variation, I've tried putting different pictures in the "main photo" spot, I've tried saving my progress and going back, I've tried to do different variations at different times, but no matter what I do, every combination uses whatever picture is in the "main picture" spot. When I go to "add variation photos" and add pictures for my different variations, I can only put pictures for one type of variation. After I do that, if I try to put pictures in for different variations, it deletes the pictures for the previous variation. And when I add photos, it goes ahead and makes its own variation combinations, which is obviously something I would need to do because how would the system know what combinations I have, and I have no way of editing them without deleting them.

I have also tried multiple different web browsers, with no difference. I've watched YouTube videos and read various articles and nothing helps. Sorry for the book, but obviously nothing is working and I'm extremely frustrated. I'm going to pause for now and I hope someone can help. Thank you.

Here is a tutorial on how to create multi-variations, which is what you want to do.

A multi-variation listing is one with more than one droplist. In your case, you are looking for three attributes (three droplists), representing material, weight, and colors.  Photos can be attached to only one variation attribute, so, unless there are also different patterns, I would recommend that your photos be based on the "color" attribute. That means that in the gray group, you may have four photos, one for each material and each thickness in the gray color, or the photo may show all 4 in one image.

This online tool may help you create a photo montage to group four photos into one:
