The last time I received a refund for a purchase made using an eBay gift card, the refund amount appeared as a line item on the checkout page with a box to check to apply the credit to a future purchase.
It was not necessary to have the gift card or to know the gift card number; all that was required to use the refund amount was to check the box on the checkout page.
