I accidentally clicked on an item because I'm having trouble with my computer screen.
I did not realize I had ordered an item costing over $1000, one I had no interest in !
I immediately sent an cancel order request. The payment was still listed as pending, and
now three days later the seller says the order cannot be cancelled. There's not even an
indication that it's been sent !

Sellers are not obligated to agree to your cancellation request, although good sellers will if the item has not yet shipped. He is obligated to ship within his stated handling time, with signature confirmation since the item is over $750.
If the seller accepts returns, you can request a return after you receive it. You will need to pay the return shipping cost. Even if the seller is responsible for the return shipping, you will want to add signature confirmation and insurance, so you must pay for the return shipping yourself.
What is the item #?

Why would it be sent if you have not paid for it? The seller can cancel the sale. They are probably waiting for day 4 so they can inform eBay that you have not paid. You will get an unpaid item strike on your account. One is ok, but if you get 2 in a year many sellers will block you from buying.

Thanks for answering. Apparently the payment went through about the same time I sent a
cancellation request in. I don't understand how I can't get my order cancelled right away when
it was within a few minutes of clicking on the order to begin with... The order has not been sent
according to my order history. How can the seller refuse to cancel it ? How can he/ she even
be allowed to refuse cancellation given my promptness ? Thanks for your help.

Whose stupid idea is it to allow sellers to refuse to cancel an immediate request for cancellation ? Of course, you said good sellers would honor the request.

If the system did not see a payment, your order would have been cancelled automatically when you requested it. If paid, then the seller must process the cancellation, and can decline your request.
Did you receive an order confirmation email? If not, it sounds like your payment got hung up during processing. If this happened, then your seller would not even see your order. The payment pending payment on your card should fall off and not be replaced with a permanent charge.
If you have an order confirmation, what do you get when you click the see detail link?

No, because there needs to be some allowance for those of us who immediately sought to
cancel the item. Now the seller has my $1000 after waiting three days to say he/she would
not accept a cancellation. I am also expected to receive the unwanted item and to pay the
shipping charge to send it back. I have sent a number of messages to the seller and have
received no reply. I am saying I do not want the item sent to me and have offered to let him
keep the coin and the $1000. Of course that would encourage his continued taking advantage
of someone's mistake.
Also, a seller cancelled something I bought, for an apparently false reason. Why can a seller
cancel Willy Nilly and a buyer can't ? Therefore I will no longer buy from eBay\
