Can't log in any more without mobile phone signal

Logging in from my desktop computer used to work with just my email address and password. Recently an extra verification step was added which requires typing in a number received by text message. I live in a place with a very unreliable mobile signal, so this isn't always practical. There is no alternative method offered and there doesn't appear to be a way of opting out of this.  How do I sign in when there's no mobile signal?

You are registered in the UK, but you are currently posting on the US ebay.com community discussion boards.

For help with UK-specific issues, you may want to post on the UK boards.

Some links about the new UK verification process (UK links):

https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Technical-Issues/Trouble-Shooting-Steps-for-New-Verification-Process...

Some useful tips in this thread as well:

You may be able to get a text sent to a land line number, if the land line is set up for that.

Or you may be able to verify by email -- though you may actually have to use a mobile phone to sign in to the eBay app in order to set that up the first time. Try doing so from a location with a good signal.

Good luck.

Add 2 step verification

To add an extra layer of security to your eBay account, we strongly recommend you enable 2 step verification. Once you’ve enabled 2 step verification, only you can access your account, even if someone else has obtained your password.

Once you’ve switched on 2 step verification, each time you sign in to your account you’ll be able to confirm your identity via an eBay app push notification or by entering a code we send you via SMS.

Here’s how to set up 2 step verification on the eBay app:

  1. Download the latest version of the eBay app.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Go to My eBay and tap Settings.
  4. Go to Sign in and security and then choose 2 Step Verification.
  5. Tap Turn on beside Use the eBay app.

Here’s how to set up 2 step verification by SMS:

  1. Sign in to your eBay account.
  2. Go to your name in the top left-hand corner and choose Account settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Select Sign in and security.
  4. Select Edit next to 2 Step Verification.
  5. Select Use text next to Text messages on mobile.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to add your mobile number.

If you change your mind and want to switch 2 step verification off—or you’d like to change from SMS to app notifications or vice versa—simply follow the steps above to turn off the function. We’ll also send you an email to let you know when you’ve switched 2 step verification on or off.

Lift your left leg at midnight to start off on the right foot. Happy new Year!

Thanks for the reply. Looks like ebay.co.uk has added 2-step auth without asking or informing anyone, and a lot of UK users are locked out of their accounts.

eburtonlab, thanks.  I hadn't noticed I was posting on the US forum. Thanks for the links. Looks like I'm not the only UK user having a problem with this.

You are very welcome. Lots of folks in the UK are having problems with the new verification system; many with out-of-date phone numbers that need updating were caught flat-footed as well. Combine that with eBay's new Help & Contact page that directs users to sign in before getting help and you can just imagine all the fun.

My suspicion is that eBay is testing that verification in the UK before introducing it elsewhere. Hopefully some changes will be made before that happens, though.
