Buyer stating item isn’t working

Hi, so I’ve gotten pretty lucky I guess, on items getting to where they need to go and being functional upon arrival… till now.  Sold & sent a cd & vhs video combo boxset. Buyer stated the vhs doesn’t work. I’m a jerk who didn’t check it cuz frankly, I no longer have a vhs player.  It was basically brand new just sitting in its original box - albeit  the “brand new” part was- that it was never played so I GET IT, that maybe age just made it go bad but I take care of my stuff soooo who knows.

SO MY QUESTION: it’s a nice box, nice booklet, nice unused cd, but then the vhs apparently not working.  Do I offer a half refund? Do I say “send it back”? It was a whopping $13.99 plus shipping and taxes …  You’d think I could make this basic decision but I’m stupid & stumped at the moment. Hell, I don’t even know how return labels work yet, lol… let alone sweating he’d send it back as safe as I packed it. Or is this just “choose my battles” and just give in and refund and take a full hit/loss?  Be gentle on me, lol, I feel so dumb on this one. Thx in advance for your thoughts & suggestions. 🙂

All sellers will eventually have to handle returns. There is no universal right answer, each seller can handle returns as they choose. Keep in mind there are trade offs for each option. Did the buyer open an item not as described return or just send a message? If they sent the message they are likely waiting on your response to see how you want to handle it. If you are comfortable with giving them a partial refund then send a message back with that offer and see if the buyer accepts. If they do great, send the partial refund.

Some sellers are dead against partial refunds and insist a buyer returns the item before refunding in full. The down side is you have to pay the return shipping. You will have to decide if the cost is worth getting a not working item back. If you want to have the buyer return it, send them a message to open the return and you will refund once you get the item back.

When a not as described return is opened one of the things the return will ask you is if you want to send the buyer a return label. If you choose yes then the system will generate the label for you, in the return, for the buyer to print or use a QR code and have the carrier print it for them.

Buyer stating item isn’t working

Hi @caliaries

The buyer deserves a full refund. Apologize for the problem and instruct him to open an item not as described return so that you can send a return shipping label - or just refund in full. After all, if the item doesn't work, why do you want to pay the shipping cost to get it back if you'll just throw it away? But that's up to you - either way is fine.

He can open the return using the option in the dropdown next to the order in his Purchase History.

Thank you! He accepted a partial refund and kept the rest of the stuff in the box set and he was kind enough to still give positive feedback and I did the same. All good. Whew! (albeit I made zero $$ on the sale but, whatever… **bleep** happens! 🤪)
