Buyer question

I am trying to get a refund on a shipment that did not arrive. Instead, another item which I did not order arrived instead. I contacted the buyer and we have been messaging back and forth on Ebay  with no resolving of the issue. I have explained that I returned the wrong shipment, provided a tracking number, and asked for a refund since I did not receive what I ordered. The seller insists that the item was delivered. The wrong item was delivered and was returned. Now they are asking that I deal directly with them by providing the email for my PayPal account so that they can give me a refund.  Is this allowed?

Correction. I cited it as package not received, since the package that was received was the wrong item. Does that matter?

Hi @sweetsojourn10

Yes, it matters.  You will lose the 'Item not received' case you opened IF the seller merely provides a tracking number that shows that the item was 'Delivered' to you.  [eBay is mainly an AI-run company ... so we have to follow instructions exactly.]

Your original post is a bit confusing, and I can't figure out everything that happened ... like how you got the seller's address, who paid for the return shipping label, and whether the label has tracking.

I'm not sure what your best move is at this point.  You might be able to convert your case into an 'Item not as described' one.  If that's not possible ... you may have to phone your credit card company, provide the tracking number on your return package, and request a chargeback.

How much money did you pay in total for the item?

Yes. The Seller has until June 6th to make it right or they will step in, if I understood correctly.

Buyer question

I will explain as best I can, because the whole thing has become very confusing. First, I ordered an item on Ebay. On May 28th I received confirmation of the order, and that estimated ETA was between June 9th -June 17th, 2025. That same day, I received a shipment of another item that I did not order. The box actually came from Amazon. I phoned Amazon and explained that I had received a shipment addressed to me, of an item that I had not ordered. I tried to find out where the shipment originated from and they told me it was a gift. I said that I had no use for the article, so they offered me a refund! I decided that it had been some kind of mix up and said I just wanted to return it, so they gave me a shipping code to scan and my husband shipped the item to back Amazon.

This is where it got weird. I received an email from the Ebay seller, showing that my item had been delivered. Naturally I contacted them and explained that my item had not arrived, but another item that was completely different. I also explained that I had returned it to the original seller (Amazon.)

The Ebay seller insisted that my ordered item had been delivered. I again explained that it had not, and that some other item had arrived from a completely different seller. This is where it stands. The seller is now requesting that I  by-pass Ebay and just provide my email associated with my PayPal account so they can send my refund, promising to do so if I close the case. I hope that clarified the situation.

Thanks for the info @sweetsojourn10 .  I'm glad you didn't pay for the shipping yourself ... but I don't think you explained how and when you opened the 'item not received' case with eBay.

The seller violated eBay policy by ordering an item from Amazon after you purchased the item from them.  I would NOT close the case.  I would wait until Day 4 after opening the INR case ... and ask eBay to step in.  [You won't see the link to do that until it's time to use it.]   I don't know how the seller will 'prove' to eBay that they shipped your item, so eBay will probably give you the refund.

You also should report the seller to eBay for the violation using this link:

https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022

If it doesn't work out getting the refund from eBay for some reason ... you may have to get your refund from your payment source ... preferably your credit card.  Amazon will be refunding your seller ... NOT you ... so it may be a little tricky describing how/why you returned an eBay item to Amazon.  Credit card companies are the easiest to explain things to.

Please post back to let us know how things go ... and if you have any questions.

Buyer question

I opened the 'item not received,' the day that the seller messaged me and claimed that the item was shown as delivered. Since my order was placed a mere day before this other item arrived, it was impossible that my order could have arrived so quickly. I opened the case several days later when I kept getting confusing messages from the seller.

Thanks for the info; I was so puzzled about why I was getting a shipment from Amazon when I didn't place an order with them. I have since reached an Ebay representative and she showed me how to close the case and open another where I could change the reason for the request for a refund to "Item not as described."

I was given a refund by PayPal, no questions asked. Thanks for all your help! It's been educational.

Buyer question

I want to wrap this up. I decided to contact FedEx since this was the shipping method used by the Ebay seller. I wish I had done this in the first place! Turns out that the tracking number provided by the seller was not associated with my home address. They told me that the shipment had gone to some other address and wouldn't tell me where. I have a FedEx account and I am always notified when a package has shipped, the status, and when it arrived. I never received any notifications about this Ebay shipment.  I was so upset that I didn't think to check on this. Anyway, PayPal first refunded my money, then they sent an email asking if I would like to give it back since I did receive the shipment. This has been a living nightmare. I doubt I will be purchasing on Ebay again anytime soon!
