There is a significant fee for a reserve price to discourage its use in most cases. Buyers don't like guessing what your price is. Instead of a reserve price, just start your auction at the lowest price you would be happy to accept.
eBay, like all companies, is free to price their product as they see fit. You either see a value in their service at that price, or you don't. No one forces you to use their service.
