I don't get how you go from International Symbol of Liberty to TRIANGLE. Maybe I'm just overlooking to obvious?

I think they mean the metal triangle that hangs on a chain and you hit it with a little metal rod - it's an instrument. A chime, or a bell, I guess. Like the liberty bell?

You were right on with the triangle being 3 sides united. liberty and united are closely associated with eachother.

Sometimes the answer to the clue isn't the item. the item is ANOTHER "clue".
