Can anyone help identify this "mystery" object?

Hello everyone! I'm still getting my feet wet at eBay, so I'm glad to have discovered the discussion boards here. Hopefully someone can help me identify the object I'm attaching a picture of and tell me a little something about it. Age? Purpose? Value? I purchased it at a thrift store 20+ yrs ago because I thought it looked neat. The original metal was black cast iron (it's heavy). My theory about it has always been that it's a letter/key holder. Any input or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Well, now I'm editing, dumbfounded because my picture didn't upload!

Give me a bit to remember the name of the glass. I can tell you it's for  hor d'eorves.  The one side for food, the other for napkins.  I'd say around the 50-60's.  My mom had something similar.  I'll email her and get back to you.

If you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree, it will spend it's whole life believing it's stupid.

WOW, I'd have never guessed THAT use! Looking forward to anything else you can tell me about it. Thanks!

Just a guess here but my first thought was a toast holder and butter dish
