Fake Hubley Doorstops

I went to an estate sale last week and purchased a nice painted cast iron doorstop with the signature Hubley on the reverse for $69. I went to the Antiques Board for help and learned that my piece most likely is a fake from China: Information Needed on Hubley Doorstop How do you differentiate fake from authenic? How many different variety of reproduced Hubleys are there out there? Is it even wise for the novice collector to purchase a Hubley with the potential that it is not authentic? Thanks, Lynn

Fake Hubley Doorstops

Lynn, I have trouble with cast iron items telling if it is real or fake. I usually ask another dealer about an item. I had a cast iron antique car. It was rusty looking. The dealer pointed out the screws on it were modern. So, I'm not a good person to ask. Hope someone will come along and let us know. silverteem

Fake Hubley Doorstops

I got this further information from John at doorstops.com: Yours is not an authentic signature. The reason it is the same size (as the authentic doorstop), John Wright bought the old Hubley molds in the late 1940's. The Hubley name was always in print letters, not in script. The special Hubley design by Grace Drayton sometimes had her signature on the back in script. John
