Rate Tables - expanded - better explanation please

There have been a few responses regarding the rate tables - and this one I do like

Does it mean I could have free shipping to those close to me and charge for those in Zone 8?  That might be interesting.  Include Zone 4 pricing in the "free shipping" listing and have the difference for Z4 vs Z8 as the charge shown to everyone in Zones 5 or higher.
 Response from Greg_shipping:
Hi Lintbrush - yes you are right. Rate tables will allow you to customize your shipping charges by zones / region - so charge low or free shipping to neighbor regions and higher costs where approriate to zone further afield - to match how your carrier might charge you. You'll therefore be more price competitive where ship costs are lower, and not risk under charging buyers that further afield..

Since the thread that got moved here from another board and subsequently locked is a jumble of things, can you explain the shipping rate thing better as a whole.  Yeah you can post replies to the locked thread, but we can't  Smiley Very Happy

That doesn't mean we can ship for free, it means we can offer free shipping to the buyer.

Hi lintbrush - OK... Ill explain rate tables again..  There are now 100 regions in the US that you can set ship rates to - roughly every state is split into 2 - so that you can be quite accurate with quoting your actual ship cost to buyers depending on where they are located. So - how do you quote ship cost by region? You create a Rate Table. Imagine you are based in CA and your shiping rates allow you to deliver Standard to Oregon, California, Washington for $3, Standard to Texas, New Mexico for $5, Standard to NY, NY and Philly for $10. Think of the rate table like a spreadsheet that you'd fill in to reflect exectly these shipping charges. Then when a buyer from NY purchases from you - they would be charged $10 for Standard shipping.

lol.......off the wall question..........

Could sellers who sell products which are banned in one state....use this to NOT ship to that state......

i.e. you can't sell x plant variety (legal plant, lol, not the smoking variety) in Cal or FL........exclude Cal or Fla ?

Hmmm.......perhaps they could raise the shipping to such an extent, no one would ever buy it....and solve the problem..........

Gregg, sorry I'm not too good at "granularity"........so right now, this will only apply to ALL listings..........one could not do 300 the regular way (whatever that is) and do one with the rate tables?

I was trying to figure out how it differs from offering calculated shipping where the buyer is charged based on their location.   That's what I use now.  Unless shipping is a flat charge, I can't offer a flat cost.

For my purposes, any pratical application woudl be if I wanted to use limited area Free Shipping and not being stuck with every buyer in Zone 8 and having to price myself out of the market.  (I'm on the other coast)

I too thought along the lines of @dhbookds.  It might be a way to price out buyers in item restricted states.

Hi lintbrush - Calculated shipping is great in that eBay calculates rate for you based on buyer location. However if you have really great prices (better than eBays calculated rates) from a certain carrier rate tables allow you to show those to your buyers as an option to be more competitive. Also YES rate tables also allow you to be selective with where you offer free shipping for example.

I just find it odd ebay would spend money on shipping zone chart with different rates . When they should remove the Shipping and H/F  Star  since it is out dated.

i use my own postage.  Shipping discounts are not really discounts through ebay.  please understand the system of how ebay profits off this...I don't think I need to explain it ..

Is calculating shipping still going to be available?

Is it going to be possible to use flat rate shipping to, say, Zones 6, 7, 8, but calculated shipping to all other zones?

Great! 45.8% down over the same time last year with 2x+ items listed. Are you impressed? I'm certainly not!

Hi llllady - yes calculated shipping will still be available, and can be used with rate tables in the way youve mentioned.

Thanks!  It sounds like it is going to be very flexible.  Let's hope that is the way it works out (and works)!

Hi letmefindpeacelord - yes, if a seller has the transaction volume to negotiate their own great discounts with carriers then using the new rate table will allow those sellers to accuratey represent their excellent rates to their buyers based on their location. This is something that current rate tables, or flat rate shipping, doesnt allow.
