Painting on hardboard??

I've found that making ACEOs on canvas and watercolor paper mounted on masonite gives the finished piece a little more weight and makes it seem more substantial somehow. Has anyone else ever worked with masonite/hardboard? I have a few extra panels listed in my auctions (I sell my artwork mainly on etsy, painterscorner.etsy.com). Are these panels worth listing? How are my prices? Honestly, they're almost free to make since the hardboard is salvaged from a local company that was burning it, so if we need to lower our prices, we probably can. Any suggestions?

I've been tempted by your gessoed hardboard a number of times, just very tight for money since February was a major setback. Yea, I chose a bad time to start listing these things, didn't I?! Haha! Send me a message, either on here or etsy (painterscorner.etsy.com) and I'll send you a free sample if you'd like. Good luck this month! I hope things pick up for everyone!

I've painted on gessoed hardboard for larger works, not ACEO size (I've used 1/8" - how thick is what you're using?). It's acceptable as a support (per teachers & books on the subject). Sue -- Finalist in Photography-Best

Hey Sue-Jim -- Yea, our masonite is 1/8" thick. The problem I've seen with larger panels is that they tend to bow a little. How big were the ones you've used and how did you handle the warping issue?

Hiya! I love those panels you guys sell. I think that maybe if you lowered your prices, you might sell more...but really they're okay the way they are. Are they selling well for you? I think it's neat too, that you're "recycling" in a way. Kelly

Masonite is my favorite thing do do my acrylic paintings on...not for aceo, but every other size! I've used it for a zillion years...Did I hint I am OLD? 😉 Vicki

Hi Kelly, Yea, I was thinking about lowering the price on some of the panels, but with ebay fees, paypal fees, and listing fees, it's tough--unless I want to only sell large quantities. The gessoed panels take *forever* to make, so I may just scrap those and only sell Canvas and Watercolor boards. Those two are so simple to make that I could probably sell them for 50 cents a piece. The trouble I'm having is making people aware they exist! Should I post a thread offering a free sample or something? I'm doing that on etsy and it's getting a huge response. I have 22 samples going out Monday, so that's 22 potential customers. Your thoughts??

Stormy I answered your email...but I'll say it here too. I didn't realize you guys had all that work in those. Based on that, plus your fees, your price is probably "right on". I guess it just depends on how many you have and how fast you want to move them. I think you're doing the right thing posting about them here, and if you stay consistent and offer a quality product, people will come to know you as the person who supplies that particular item and word of mouth will help you there as well. Have you posted them or a blurb about them on our "Do you sell supplies? POst them here" thread? I'll go find it and bring the link here for you in case you haven't. Good luck! I think they're wonderful! Best, Kelly:-x

1/8" Masonite (or hardboard) is okay up to 16x20 - anything over that should have bracing put on it (just like for stretched canvas except glued on the back of the panel). Sue -- Finalist in Photography-Best

Oh - & it needs to be gessoed on both sides to prevent warping. Sue -- Finalist in Photography-Best

This topic was branched to Canvas, linen or cotton? Stretch your own? Do tell!? but please feel free to keep chatting here about the masonite, k? Just felt we might be able to use a canvas thread. *S* -- Edited by kellyscolorstudio at 03/02/2008 11:37 AM PST

If you lower your per-unit price on large orders, that may help sales for those artists who are going to be using them a lot. I'll review them as soon as I get mine. That should help sales too. With things like that, maybe reviews really do help -- as long as the product has the same title every time so that it keeps getting attached to the review. -- robertsloan2art -- original ACEO, OSWOA and larger artwork. My samples came today! Thank you so much! I love the surface, it's utterly beautiful -- smooth, with just a little tooth, I can't wait to use them with my alkyds! I could get so much detail on these! -- robertsloan2art -- original ACEO, OSWOA and larger artwork. A big part of life is recognizing that creativity is human.
