And here's a very positive post. It is an odd day (April 1st) to post this, but I think my chess collection website is finally ready to be publicly viewed. Check out my collection at: http://www.tykroll.com/chess/ and please tell me what you think.

Neo, Very nice job. I especially like the write-ups cause that takes a bit or reasearch and sifting through literature. Plus I enjoy reading about the background on the different sets. If I may make a suggestion: you may want to replace some of the photos later on. ex. The pulpit series has some weird lighting. They actually look kinda spooky in a way I hadn't seen them before. More uniform lighting may not be as much of a distraction. Otherwise, it was very nice visiting your site and checking out your collection. Keep it up! Dan

Thanks for checking out my site Dan, I actually think the pulpit sets, especially the bone ones are spooky anyway and that's what I was going for. Mostly the backlighting is because I'd rather have the open window for background than the crap in my apartment, but I get your point about the light. I've heard mixed opinions on this. I think I'll try to take a presentation shot, just one of each piece in a row pictured clearly for each of my sets at some point and leave the (overly?) artistic hard light shots in as well. I'm not really satisfied with every picture either, and I may take some down when I get a chance to take better ones.

Ty, I think the site is impressive and the photos are beautifully artistic. One possible suggestion would be to vary the background shade from blue/grey to light shades of other colors in some of the photos, for variety. Just a suggestion from an artistically-challenged person. I'll put a link to your site on my site assuming it's OK with you.

That would be great Jon, thanks! Thanks for the suggestion. The thing about the blue gray backgrounds is they come from the sky and/or whatever color the gray/brownish wood on my balcony happens to be looking. I suppose I could get pieces of posterboard of different colors to set in front of it for pictures. Now that would be REALLY artistic. 🙂 It's mainly my camera flash is not good to chess sets, particularly closeup and that's the best place for natural lighting short of taking my sets outside, so it's the poster board or getting some real photographic lighting for other places to mix it up a bit. (Did we start a thread for how to photograph chess sets? I think that might be a good thread.)

I discovered a new chess site available at http://www.chess-theory.com/ct_virtual_art_museum_chess_art.php A large part of the contents come from web pages of group members but there are also pages from various publications and a section devoted to chess in fine arts ("The Chess Players" paintings etc).

Has anyone checked out: http://www.chessantiquesonline.com/ lately? Dermot's store was taken down and then back up. It looks like Ciaran Rochford is taking over? Dermot's son? Anyway there's now a link for the Rochford Collection, not for sale, a lot of which has been used in his articles, but not all of which I've seen before. There's also a Misc link and who knows what will go there. A page about Alan's book with other info is pics up at: http://www.britishchesssets.com/ (for those who may not be following the 'books' thead.) Ty
