Why does the drop box at my post office frequently lock up while I'm putting boxes in it

Why is that and is there any way for me to unlock it? I'll put 2 boxes in it. Then it often locks up before I put the rest of my boxes in it.

It locks when it's full.

Ask at your Post Office…. Maybe they can suggest an option.

You could advise your post office it's too small.  See if they can do anything about it.  Hard to say if they can/will.

It's blocked by too many packages.

When you lift the handle up to close the chute, dropping the package into a bin on the other side of the wall, it dumps the package by opening the back panel of the chute. If the package can't fall clear of the chute, it jams the back panel so that the panel can't close up properly, and thus you can't open it again on your side.
