Why do buyers have so long to return?

I sold an Apple Watch on Oct 2nd, it was listed as used with photos however the buyer felt that the strap was a little ‘used’ and he’d have to replace the strap. He said he’d accept a refund to cover the cost of a new strap or a full refund. From my end the Watch was used but in really very good condition and for a 3yr old watch worn every day the use was more than in line with the age.

I couldn’t be bothered arguing and so said I’d give a full refund on refund of the item. I sent across a return label and the buyer said it would go in the post on 3rd October. Since then radio silence. Despite a polite email asking when the return would be likely he is just ignoring me. For whatever reason he seems to be waiting until the very last minute to return the item.

Why does ebay give people the thick end of 3 weeks to return an item?! I provided the returns label straight away but now have to wait an age for a return but am expected to refund straight away once the item is received.

I’m not a massive seller however this really is annoying

Never wore a watch myself, the time is now. Pay pal gives buyers a full 6 months (180 days) to open a claim here, so beware of this when you sell.  There are many things about doing business here that are annoying, but are part of doing business on the internet. Good Luck to you.

Why do buyers have so long to return?

According to ebay's MBG, the buyer has 5 business days to return the item except in the case of an exchange or replacement. They then have up to 20 days to return it.

The buyer must ship the item back to the seller within 5 business days from when the buyer starts the return. If the seller shipped a replacement or exchange and the buyer has not shipped the original item back within 20 days of the buyer starting the return, we charge the buyer for the replacement or exchange.

Why do buyers have so long to return?

Thanks for the replies. According to the Ebay sale the buyer has until the 23rd Oct the return the item, the opened the case on the 3rd Oct. I queried this with eBay and they said it’s the process and I can’t do anything about it.

Don't communicate with the buyer anymore. Simply BLOCK and Ignore. If the watch hasn't been shipped back within 5 business days, simply call eBay and ask them to close the return in your favor. It sounds like the buyer was trolling for a partial, but you called their bluff. Retu7rn for refund is always you best option on light/low cost shipping items.

Did you actually accept the return?  Or did ebay have to step in at some point?

Where are you seeing the date 10/23 ?   Like this (as an example)?

That doesn't make sense except you're in the United Kingdom and I'm in the US, so YMMV. The only thing I can think of is that you maybe offered a partial refund and they turned it down (or are still "considering" it)? When you make a partial offer (which the buyer does not have to accept), eBay gives them 30 days to accept it or return the item for a full refund. What does the case say?

green-night, that’s exactly the message I see with the date on it.

ebay haven’t got involved, buyer asked for a refund, whilst disagreeing with the reason I immediately accepted it and issued a returns label.

Since you sold it on ebay.uk, the buyer protection rules there apply and are different then they are here where the buyer is given only 5 days..

ebay.uk gives 14 days to return on NAD returns, which are I assume are business days, so three weeks makes sense.

The buyers  in UK  complained  to ebay  they  needed  more then 30 days  for protection ,Do to the fact their  customs  service  processed time  has  been slow  from time to time  .  they should have complained too their goverment .  So paypal went to 80 days for returns .  Then later on they  went  180 returns , which  is not easy  for card holders to file for  ,do to extream reasons needed for it ,card holders have to have a lot of proof  for it  .  keep mined that paypal doesn't want the buyers to do credit card charge backs .

Really that does make sense as the 5 days to return something is that they have to have shipped it within 5 days, not received so there was no need on eBay's part to increase the timeframe. But like I said, I know nothing about UK rules. Good to know though.

Didn't even look at seller's location. Wish they would mention that in the op whenever they're in a different country.
