Tracking shows both delivered/picked up at PO AND Returned to Sender

I sold a small, low value item early in August which I shipped out promptly with tracking. It made it's way over the course of a couple of days to the buyer and the tracking showed up as "DELIVERED INDIVIDUAL PICKED UP AT PO". I thought that was the end of it. HOWEVER, yesterday I found the package in my mailbox marked as "UNCLAIMED/RETURN TO SENDER"! I was surprised. I checked the tracking for it and yes, it shows August 7 "DELIVERED INDIVIDUAL PICKED UP AT PO". Followed by August 27 "UNCLAIMED/BEING RETURNED TO SENDER".

Has this ever happened to anyone else? How will eBay handle it if there is a case opened?

Obviously, someone at the PO entered the wrong code, but this is a totally new one for me. I plan on refunding if I am contacted but I'm not sure I will be contacted, especially as this was a 'make offer' sale and the buyer was consistently slow in responding at each step of the process and then used the 'note to seller' as a means of spamming me for a donation.

That said, I would refund and cancel sale to to problem with address.

Your buyer has voided the MBG with the return. I'd sit on it, too, until the buyer asks about the item. You can invoice the buyer for a shipping label if they still want the item. If not... it's up to you. I'd probably refund if asked... maybe deducting shipping and FVFs. You did get your item back to resell, after all. Good luck!
