Sent out a pair of front fenders for a Model T via Greyhound two weeks ago. I don't normally use them because it's not convenient as I have to go to the airport but I've never had an issue. Get a message from the buyer yesterday saying he has heard nothing. I tried tracking the package and it comes back as not a valid shipment. Called customer service and they told me they were supposed to have issued a valid tracking number before it left the depot (which could mean it never left the depot or they put it on a bus without tracking). I stayed on the line while she called the Memphis depot to see what was up. Whoever answered the phone there hung up on her and would not answer when she tried calling back. She sent an email asking them to call me, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm going to try calling the destination to see if it arrived, and then call customer service again. I'm not even going to go to the depot at all - that will get me nowhere.
Ugh. This is going to cost me almost $500 to make it right with my customer.

I had no clue Greyhound was into shipping. If I worked at Greyhound and the fenders came up unboxed to load on a bus I'd think they were trash. Were they in a box? Did it meet all package requirements?
No single package will be accepted for transportation that exceeds one hundred (100) pounds in actual weight."

They were never a real shipping service. Did the fenders have well attached address labels ?

Yep. Banded together and rolled in cardboard with a shipping label in a clear place.
Why would you think something was trash if it had a properly affixed shipping label?

Is greyhound tracking recognized by eBay? I thought it was limited to USPS, FedEx or UPS.

Rolled in cardboard??? Yes trash, especially if the rusty old fenders were visible. Not given the respect of a box. The shipper may not have seen or thought there would be a label on such a trashy looking item.
DOA shipping, a new way to get rid of stuff you can't recycle or have picked up at the curb for free.

If it was rolled and open ended the fenders may have fallen out. Even if a closure was made, they were heavy. If you had to hold it in a certain way to prevent damage - that is the kiss of death.

I certainly hope you don't work for a shipping company.

No, I basically made my own box. Ends were closed and everything. It sounds like a job to box up something like that without having an actual box to start. It IS a bit of work but I've been at this a while and have worked out a system for large items.

I went to the local depot, they let me look in their package room. It's not there. Customer service thought it would still be there but evidently it was sent out or otherwise removed. Several other places to check. There is also the possibility the buyer is lying and actually has them and is trying to get a refund, but I consider that to be the least likely.

Finally got a resolution to this. I filed a claim, they took 60 days to investigate. They could not locate my package, so they paid the full stated value of $300 plus the cost of the shipping. I still would have liked the customer to get there fenders, but Greyhound made it right.

Yes, they are a "freight" shipper. They are very reasonable for bulky items....like fenders or chairs. The only catch is you have to take it to them and the customer has to pick up at a local terminal.

I know it isn't funny, but the image of a Greyhound bus driving around the country endlessly with a pair of fenders pops into my head 🙂
Not good to have vintage items lost.
Last biggie I shipped was a rear window glass for a 46-48 Dodge "business coupe". Nobody is doing re-pops of those. Built my own wood box. Shipped USPS............. before the days off crazy surcharges. Had to go about 4 states away. (zone 4) It made it in one piece.

Seems that I read someplace recently that Greyhound was going to stop doing that type of shipping.
Maybe it was just "express" shipping services.

Greyhound Package Express was a real shipping service that's been around for many years but they ended their shipping operations at the end of Sept.
