Can you hold a package for shipping at the request of the buyer without penalty from eBay?

Not really. Once payment is made the clock is ticking against your expected ship time. If the buyer tell you in advance of payment you can ask them to delay payment until they want it shipped. Otherwise you have to bite the bullet, Several time I have had to the hit to delay shipping at a buyers request.
This issue has been raised many times in the community chat on Wednesdays', We always get its being looked into. Clearly not an eBay priority help sellers on this.
What irks me most is that as sellers we are trying to provide good customer service and if we can help a buyer out by delaying shipping, we shouldn't get dinged for that.
