Shipping calculators inaccurate

I have been a small seller on and off on Ebay for many years.  I have always enjoyed using Ebay as a resource to gain a large audience for rare or specialized items.  Its been more of a hobby and not necessarily a money making venture, which means "profit" is definitely relative and flexible.

That said, I've been having, as of this last selling round, some serious problems with the shipping calculator provided on Ebay when listing an item.  I have found that besides small packages that can go first class, I have had to make up the cost of shipping because the calculator gave me the wrong calculations for which the buyer paid upon completion of the purchase.

I am in the process of modifying all of my items for sale now to Flat Rate Priority as that is the only way it seems that I can provide potential buyers with an accurate shipping cost.  Unfortunately, as we all know, the buyer wants the most competitive shipping available and sometimes Flat Rate Priority just isn't it -- but its the only thing I can offer at this time without a proper calculator.

For example, I sold two larger items quickly and easily on Ebay.  After going to the post office and learning that the shipping was almost 3 times the estimated cost : for example the calculator told the seller the cost was 7.85 when actually it turned out to be 21 and some change.  Understandably the buyer is not happy.  I have offered three different shipping options and have not heard back yet.  Another buyer for the same exact type of item immediately demanded a refund when informed of the actual cost of shipping.  I expect the other will too, so that will be two lost sales and potentially two negative feedbacks for me.  I can't do business that way.

At the post office I was informed that the options and costs offered by the Ebay calculator reflect commercial account rates.  I am not a large seller and therefore cannot and will not purchase a commercial shipping account.

I have also investigated shipping rates for UPS and have found that the Ebay shipping calculator also offers drastically lower rates than is the real cost, for example the same item above, if shipped via UPS as estimated by the Ebay calculator was about 15 dollars less than the actual shipping price for the buyer's location.

I have called Ebay twice to explain the situation, they could offer no advice that pointed up my doing anything wrong, typical questions like, "Did you feel out the dimensions and weight of the package accurately?"  Yes I did, "Did you choose the shipping service and designated class accurately?"  Yes, I did, this isn't my first rodeo.

Please tell me what is going on? Is it me? Is it Ebay? Is it the shippers?

And most importantly, how can this be rectified?  Because if it can't, I'm not sure if I can do business on anymore and I also wonder if I will potentially have problems in the future as a buyer as well.

Thank you.

For items measuring more than 12 x 12 x 12 = 1728 cubic inches, dimensional weight would be applied.

You must select Package Type = LARGE package & input the correct package dimensions, along with the weight, on the selling form.

eBay Shipping no longer provides Parcel Select Ground labels.

If you wish to ship economy ground, offer USPS Retail Ground (pay at your PO).

If you wish to use eBay Shipping for your labels, offer Priority Mail.

Even as a small occasional seller you need to treat this as a business.  We see too many small sellers that say, I'm not in business when in fact they are.  Point is that a business needs a solid foundation and for a business that means a business plan.  IF you have things in place, it is easier to react to "business problems" when they pop up.

You have identified what most sellers here know - SHIPPING is you highest cost, short of sourcing, so becoming a bit "expert" at it is important.  I'll go more into this....

I have not had issues with the shipping calculator being off, BUT what I do is package items as I am listing them.  So that means ID-ing the box I will ship in, the packing materials, etc.  I carefully measure the box and then weigh it all packaged.  THEN, once I have dimensions and weight, enter that into the shipping calculator.

This sounds like you are buying postage at the Retail counter?  Please tell me you are not doing that!  Once you sell an item you can't go back to the buyer and request additional shipping costs!

At the post office I was informed that the options and costs offered by the Ebay calculator reflect commercial account rates.  I am not a large seller and therefore cannot and will not purchase a commercial shipping account.

OK, here is where we can help!  IF you buy shipping labels through eBay you are getting Commercial prices!  You do not need a USPS commercial account.  So you buy your labels through eBay and you get the same prices as the shipping calculator!  BUT you don't need to buy eBay labels, you can sign up for free accounts with Stamps.com or PirateShip and get those same commercial rates!  But no eBay seller who wants to make a profit buys retail postage!

This is the same issue - eBay sells you labels and you get the commercial rates.

What is going on is you do not understand how to buy postage, how the eBay shipping calculator works.

Keep asking questions.

You have gotten excellent advice. Basically you have a lot to learn about shipping.

As noted, you can purchase postage at online rates through eBay; you don't need to set up any special account, the discounted online USPS rates are  automatically available to all eBay sellers.

Your recent listing for a croquet mallet offered shipping via Parcel Select Ground. That service is only available online. You cannot purchase it at the PO counter.   You are responsible for setting up your listings correctly. You are not supposed to go beck to the buyer and ask them to pay for your mistake.

I share the other poster's suspicions that your shipping calculator was not set up with the correct package dimensions, so the buyer was charged regular weight-based rates when they should have paid for the 'dimensional weight".

As noted, eBay is phasing out access to purchasing postage labels for Parcel Select Ground, but they can still be purchased elsewhere online such as through PayPal.  But usually it's better to ship via Priority Mail because the extra cost is negligible.

FYI for my last 3 sold listings, I had chosen USPS parcel select as the only shipping method. Upon going to purchase postage through eBay, parcel select isn't allowed... it's on the list but not clickable. Even though the buyer paid for parcel select. They were all packages well within size and weight limits. I lost a few bucks off each sale by having to pay extra for postage.

eBay has decided to phase out access to Parcel Select Ground labels, even though USPS has made no changes in their services or policies, and it's offered by all other online postage sellers including PayPal, endicia, stamps.com, etc. You can purchase Parcel Select Ground postage through PayPal at

www.PayPal.com/shipnow

But do compare prices before you do that. For Zones 1 - 4, the USPS online price for Priority Mail is  less than a dollar more than Parcel Select Ground. If you're a TRS you get a 3% discount when purchasing Priority labels through eBay, which often makes it cheaper than Parcel Select

IMHO Parcel Select ground should only be offered when necessary such as for hazmat or Oversize packages (i.e., length-plus-girth above the Priority limit of 108 inches).

It looks like Fedex ground is also no longer an option

@atomic_bacon

Yes, eBay is phasing out parcel select.  The reason being is that it is only a few cents or buck less than Priority Mail and it gets second class handling.  So perhaps it is time to adjust one's listing to increase prices to account for this change in shipping cost?  The alternative is to accept lower overall profits.

Yeah, I'll just offer priority mail or first class from now on. I just don't understand why parcel is still an option under "eBay rates" when listing, if we can't even use it.

I still see parcel available on the app when I look at costs. So until that is phased out by ebay....

If you need a label make it on the ebay app and email it to yourself and print. That email option is always there. Or make label then go on Ebay and use the reprint option.

There are several shipping services that you can choose for your listing but can't purchase postage through eBay for, including not only Parcel Select but also Retail Ground and First Class letters and flats (AKA Large envelope).

I prepackage all my items to know the dimensions and weight for the eBay shipping calculator - it will offer a low price say 1.88 - then when it sells I go and buy the shipping label and every time the price for the label is NEVER the price the calculator said it was. Thinking it was going to be 1.88 its now 3.89 - sucks because I try to price my items keeping in mind my costs (like shipping)

the calculator does not work

The calculator works fine, IF you set it up correctly.

You are apparently setting it up to charge for a First Class flat (AKA Large envelope).  You have to choose "Package/thick envelope" as the package type, if you want to charge the buyer the rate for a package.  As noted above, eBay doesn't sell labels for First Class letters and flats.
