I shipped the wrong item to a Buyer. He opened a Return Request and started that process. I did not wait for the item to return but rather I sent out the correct item via eBay shipping. I did receive the original item but my question is how to close the transaction without refunding money for the sale? All I did was exchange items. Any help is appreciated.

...personally, I would rather wait for the case to be cleared before doing anything else...
...send a message to your buyer and sincerely ask him/her to close the return request from his/her end as you already sent out the correct replacement (by using your package tracking information)...
...there is still a potential of honest buyers in this world...and therefore, I wish you a lot of lucks...

You can click the help and contact link at lower right of this page. Speak to an eBay rep. If you don't get it closed, eBay will refund on your dime. It's the buyer that opened the case that is the one who to close it.
I would respond to the case with the tracking number of the correct item you shipped before calling.
