I just found out the hard way that when printing labels through ebay using fedex, that the cost they show is only an estimate. The label I printed through ebay showed a cost of 12.68(I weigh and measure everything I ship). Today I was looking over my fees on Ebay and noticed I was charged a 38.00 shipping fee(I generally deal in smaller items so this caught my attention). I immediately got on the phone with fedex and was told that 12.68 was only an estimate. She then ran off a list of added charge for this added charge and actual cost is 38.00.The dimensions and weight I put in matched what fedex had,so that was not an issue.I totally understand if my size and weight were off but to tell you one price and just beable to charge whatever they feel is absolutely ridiculous! I am also not happy that this added charge was taken out through ebay without them even making me aware of this! Not that it is important, but they charged me 38.00 to ship a 2lb 9OZ baseball bat from wisconsin to ohio!

Wow that doesn`t sound right ? Did they say what the added charges were ? We use to Fed Ex baseball and softball bats and they were always pretty inexpensive. Guess we better be careful in the future. That being said we have only been using UPS lately. Better rates usually and never any problems.....yet

Many threads on this. Personally I've never had this issue with Fedex (all of mine have come back at the same price or LESS than quoted) but many others have.
As an alternative to eBay shipping and if USPS is not an option, use Pirateship who offers UPS shipping. UPS on Pirateship is different from eBay because they take the money upfront, non of this upcharge nonsense.

The first and only time I used FedEx or UPS, don't remember which one it was, I was charged almost double what they told me.
I found out the price they showed me was only an estimate and they both like adding extra charges before you get the final bill.

this has been issue for years on ebay...nothing new to see here.
And it only gets worse since that conclusion...
...There is something about the rigid posture of a proper, authentic blind
As if extended arms reached to pass his blindness onto others.

FedEx has VERY COMMONLY overcharged us. They used to check and give refunds if they overcharge, but their support got worse over the last 2 years and they literally don't refund even if they're in the wrong.
Padded enveloped were coming up as ludicrous numbers such as 40x10x10... as if we even have boxes that size!
The reality is, the items get damaged during transit, and rather than taking responsibility for it, they throw it in any box they could find and it gets recharged to higher rates once scanned.
Here's a little story. Our local FedEx guy visited us, and when they had the new rules earlier in the year (FedEx PAK's with 5 inch limit) we told them we aren't sure if we'll be able to use them anymore, because the price vs the risk of losses isn't reasonable.
He took one of our mounts, measured it, and it was barely within 5 inches, showed us how to pack it and everything, said it was just fine to use with FedEx. Basically talking us in to still using them.
I asked him about if he could check shipping engineers or w/e we used in the past to check the photos, he said he was contacting them.
A few weeks later to supposedly help us, bringing his "engineer and specialists". The very first thing he said when he looked at the PACKAGE THE HE HAD PACKED WEEKS EARLIER was 'You know I'm going to be honest with you, I don't think your items are suitable for FedEx".
All I could think was "seriously!?" That was the package he packed himself! And then they measured it, it was within the size limit, but "barely" so they deemed that it was "not good to send". Which honestly made no sense to me, because if it's within the limits of the terms of service, what's the problem?
They tried to tell us that this "only happens to us". So I did a quick Google and showed them that all over here and Amazon it's happened, and other sellers I've spoke to had the same thing happen.
The lady with them had the nerve to say "Well your items probably got stuck in the conveyor belt and caused a jam and that's the reason theirs didn't go through". Literally blaming US for the others getting overcharges!
When in reality, it should be simple:
- If the item is within dimensions and their scanner says it's larger, that can be confirmed by their photos, and shippers should be protected.
- If the item was within dimensions/policy, and FedEx DAMAGED the item during shipment, THEY should be the ones responsible. But rather than take responsibility, they're overcharging shippers, basically making shippers pay for their mistakes.
Oh , and on the topic of photos, they claimed they "don't take photos". Meanwhile, I have forwarded emails from our last FedEx guy before this one that shows they literally take 2 photos per second of everything that passes through on the conveyor belt. And other reps confirmed this was a lie and that they still, indeed, take photos.
The moral of this story? FedEx takes 0 responsibility for the overcharges and it's nearly impossible to get them resolved. I highly recommend NOT using FedEx.
And on the topic of UPS, they do indeed overcharge as well, in addition to fuel charges/etc. They have much better CS and cover mistakes more. But it's misleading to say they won't charge more than their estimates.

Yep, over sized items, long a long baseball bat, will get dinged with extra charges. Fedex has long been shameless in aggressively adding on these extra charges as they know that there is little chance at an appeal. Best only to use Fedex for smaller rectangular boxes and only if the savings are substantial relative to USPS.

This is a LONG time FedEx problem. I solved it in two ways.
1 I NEVER ship ANYTHING FedEx.
2 When it's required, I use UPS, and ONLY buy my labels on Pirate Ship. eBay's package calculator for ANY service other that USPS, never seems to be right. You get overcharged. NEVER one issue with UPS through Pirate. Anything that can, goes USPS.

There's also a fee for delivery to "remote" addresses. I don't know if ebay's shipping takes this into account when giving price estimates. I'm not sure what it is now, but $10+ probably - it's going up to $15 after the first of the year.
I do not ship UPS or Fedex with eBay or Amazon. Because these shipments are shipped through eBay's and Amazon's accounts, you can't dispute a charge directly with UPS or Fedex because you're not the account holder. And eBay and Amazon apparently don't care to do this.
There have been a couple of sellers who have gotten UPS charges of hundreds of dollars after the fact. What sometimes happens is that a smaller box will be sitting on top of a larger and/or heavier box when it goes through the size scanner/scale. The label on top is the only one that gets scanned and the weight gets input as the combined weight of the two and the measurement is that of the combined packages. If that happens to me with my own account, I can likely prove to UPS that it's a mistake. I know amazon rarely, if ever, goes to bat for the seller in cases like this. Not sure about ebay, but given ebay's history on going to bat for sellers in cases of credit card chargebacks, I don't have much confidence. Don't know about PirateShip either, but I'd have the most confidence in them putting forward my case.

3 - 5 years ago,FedEx was a problem, but they have been pretty good with me as of late. UPS even better. Always double check weight and measurements. I know you did, but I've made errors thinking 11 pounds on the scale when it actually said 17 (because the box was over my eyesight, the cat got on the scale at the time, etc.).

98% of my sales are sent via USPS. Balance by UPS. You can go to the UPS website, enter the details, including if it's residential, validate the address, and you should be okay.
Remember that with USPS you round up or down to the nearest inch.

It's a bait and switch scheme brought to you by FedEx and eBay. It's been going on for years, so that means it's working.
