Hello everyone,
A small rant with questions to follow. I buy and sell items occasionally on Ebay and read the forums regularly.
Today I received an item I won via auction. My heart sank when I examined the purse to realize:
1. It is quite possibly a fake (my own fault for buying anything designer on Ebay). The purse feels more vinyl than leather, but....
2. There are several large rips on the interior of the purse. OBVIOUS RIPS. I went back and looked at the original listing - there is no mention of this. Why would a seller do that? Seriously...does the seller think the buyer wouldn't notice? The purse was not wrapped up in the box, but I can't see anyway I could have done this sort of damage when opening the box. The box was not in anyway damaged.
Questions: I have filed a return request noting my considerations, mainly the rips in the interior. I don't want to get in a you know what match over the purses' legitimacy. I have never returned anything on Ebay. How much of a hassle will this be? The seller has a 14 day return policy....
I paid via PayPal - they are to deduct the funds on 7/6. Will they deduct the funds even if there is a return in process?
What if the seller does not respond?
I realize why "The River" is so popular....true hassle free returns. I so rarely retun anything, that this whole process caught me off guard.
Thank you for listening!

You should have fled a claim for "Significantly not as described" (SNAD) rather than a regular return. Now you'll get stuck with the return postage cost.

If there is a case open, the money is simply, "held" in a buyer & seller purgatory. It is returned to you upon confirmation of receipt by the seller. If they don't say they received it, but the tracking shows delivered, you can ask ebay to step in. Yes, some sellers are just sneaky. I had a seller send me a purse on another site they used, then simply reattached the tags, and called it NWT. It had stains on the inside, receipts, and even a lady bug carcass. Nice. She seriously thought I wouldn't do anything, or know how.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback!
This morning, I received a message from the seller saying that a return is not warranted, despite their having a 14 day return policy. Should I respond to the seller or wait for ebay to step in, i.e. on the 4th day?
Again, thank you -
Angela

@russianbluecatgirl Lets get a few facts straight ... you filed a claim in eBay's Reolution Center correct? If so you need to let it runs its course regardless of any messages from the Seller. Per another Member's post, since you did not file a SNAD you may have to pay the return postage ... some Sellers who make honest mistakes will pay for the return (I have). So for the claim, the Seller has "X" number of days to accept or ignore your claim ... if ignored and their time runs out THAT's when you have eBay step in and close the case in your favor ... full refund.
If the Seller messages and says no need for the claim, I will refund if you close the case DO NOT listen to that advice ... once a claim is closed it is over ...

Hello,
Thank you for your response and all the information!
I feel really foolish in not filing a SNAD. I went to my purchase history page and chose the return item pull down tab and went from there. I have never done a return on Ebay...foolish mistake on my part to forget about the resolution center.
I am okay with paying return shipping. I am not okay with the seller now not wanting to honor the 14 day return policy. I will wait and not engage in any more discussion with the seller.
Many of us gripe about our sales being down on Ebay - stuff like this, not honoring an agreement and being combative about a return requst doesn't endear people to Ebay.
I sound like a cranky old person (laughing).
Again, thank you -

By, "not warranted", do you mean not accepted? If so, I would send them this:
You sent me something that is not at all as described. It has large cuts, and here are the pictures again of what you sent me. Not only does you having a return policy mean you have to accept it, but you did not disclose the damage. If you do not follow your policy, ebay will step in and help. Thanks.
Send them pictures, then wait.

You did open an SNAD. As long as the reason you chose, when asked why you were returning, is considered SNAD. Some responders are under the impression that requesting a return from the purchase history is not an SNAD. IT IS an SNAD unless the reason is considered remorse.

Thank you so much for your advice!
It appears I will be waiting for the 4th day to as Ebay to step in. No more contact from the seller - the last being, they (I'm paraphrasing here) don't feel they should have to accept the return, even though:
1. They have a 14 day return policy. I don't think you can "cherry pick" which items you chose to accept back.
2. They did not provide pictures of the inside of the purse where the damage is.
3. The purse is most likely a fake.
I now know to ask for more pictures if I ever have a question about an items condition. I just have never had this type of experiece.
Again, thanks to everyone for their assistance on this!

You got me at the river comment! True to that. But, in all respect, I have seen today the LIGHT of HOPE from Ebay. I thought that there is no way to recover my stolen packages, but I did receive a refund for that. Still, they need to change the entire shipping model (provide more shipping alternatives, work with USPS to get some accountability in difficult situations etc). Or, just request everything delivered with "siggi confirmation" / insurance. I felt so burned but the whole thing, but Ebay proved that it can be the river (sometimes)!!!
You need to take personal responsibility here. If you have a problem receiving packages, it is to to YOU to fix the problem not ebay. Signature confirmation and insurance aren't going to solve your problem. Rent a PO box. Have your packages shipped to a safer location. Have them held at the PO for pick up. Stop expecting others to fix your problem. If you want insurance and signature confirmation, ask the seller to add it at your expense. Insurance won't keep your mail from disappearing and USPS won't always pay off on it.
