I realized that I sent the wrong item last week.
I’ve contacted them but I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else.
I would like to fix my mistake but I also want that item returned to me. But now I’m dealing with a middle man (the drop shipper) which is actually against eBay’s policies. So wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what you would do? This is exactly why drop shipping should not be allowed because normally I would be able to easily communicate with my buyer and I can’t do that. I’m now relying on this middle man.

And obviously I feel stupid for making this mistake - I realize I might be out of luck now on the loss of the higher value game if they don’t return it.

There's nothing you can do until (or if) the buyer opens a NAD (not as described) claim.
If that happens, accept the return, provide the return shipping label and issue a refund. (No return=no refund.)
If the buyer still wants the correct item, you can relist it and he can purchase.

would you report this buyer to eBay for drop shipping or just leave it?

Nope. You have no proof and it doesn't matter to your transaction.
My guess is that you won't hear back because whoever bought/receives the item will be happy with it.

It would be very easy for eBay to look through their purchases and see that they’re using other sellers for DS. But yes, I’ll just take it as a loss and lesson learned if I don’t get that game back.

If the buyer filed a not as described case, then they would have to return it for a refund. If they don't, there is nothing you can do.
Buyers can file a case they received the wrong item and get a refund. However, there is no such case a seller can file. There is no I sent the wrong item and want it back case.
The buyer is not breaking eBay rules as they can have their purchase sent to any place they enter when paying. It's handing a purchase off to another retailer that is not allowed. A buyer can do what ever that want with their purchase.
Unless the buyer contacts you, you will just have to move on. Next time take care when filling orders.

'sent the wrong item'...you?
'buyer of item is clearly a drop shipper'..buyer bought item from you and sold it to someone else already?
Sounds like a done deal.
Always nice to get a better item for the bucks.
