Why does eBay want me to send a full return of 485, which was the sales price of 465 plus 25 shipping, when I only received around 420 from eBay as a payout????

Refunds

When you refund the buyer, eBay will credit your fees.  You will never recoup your actual shipping costs.

Refunds

Because you have to refund the total amount, not what you made after everyone takes their cut.

Refunds

Law requires you to refund your buyer full item price and shipping. This has nothing to do with eBay.

What you received as pay out was after eBay's fees and when you refund you will get your fees back from.

eBay minus $0.30.

Following is a rough workings of what happens

Item Price + postage  $485

eBay fees $65 (This could include postage which is not refunded back to you)

Pay out £420.00

eBay fees refund $40

You refund $445

Total refund to buyer $485.00

You will be out of pocket for the postage charge + $0.30 and this is cost of selling online.

Hope this clarifies

Depending on why eBay wants you to give a refund they may keep your fees.
