Hi everyone hope all is well,
Can someone help me understand how refunding a buyer works since this is my first experience? I am a little confused about how exactly I should refund the buyer without getting charged twice. Heres the details
- Sold a hoodie for $106 on Sept 24 & transferred the funds out of my PayPal after shipping
- Buyer receives the hoodie but requests a refund claiming it is not as described
- This causes PayPal to make my account balance Negative -$106 because I already transferred the funds into my bank account.
- I choose to accept the refund and agreed to send the money back when I receive the hoodie.
- During this time, I sold a few other items on eBay causing my balance to back to $0. The hoodie transaction is still on PayPal labeled as "on hold"
I have now received the hoodie but am confused as to how refunding works. PayPal already took the $106 from me when he originally requested the refund but eBay is still telling me to refund the buyer. My question is if I refund him again on eBay, will the transaction on PayPal labeled "on hold" be released? I don't want to refund the buyer through eBay again and not have them reimburse me for the PayPal refund. Sorry if this question is confusing but I am desperately looking for advice. Thank you

Any time a buyer files a case, the amount is "on hold." Since you don't actually have the funds in Paypal, you will need to transfer enough into your Paypal account so you can actually make the refund to the buyer. Do that now, since you have 2 days to refund the buyer, but might be given some leeway since you have to transfer funds.

You need enough in your PayPal balance to repay the buyer's entire original payment. So if your buyer paid $106 plus shipping plus sales tax, you need at least that total amount in your PayPal balance to cover the refund because PayPal does not give back the fees taken from you.
But it will take 3-5 days to transfer funds back from your bank account, by which time eBay will already have forced a refund from your reimbursement method back to your buyer.
Instead, have someone send you instant cash with Friends & Family into your PayPal balance.

The buyer hasn't been refunded yet. PayPal put the funds on hold but didn't send them to the buyer.
Go ahead and refund through eBay - that will release the held funds to the buyer.
Since you sold enough to cover the refund it sounds like you're good to go for this transaction - but as posted above, if you didn't have the funds in PayPal you'd need to sort that out quick. The best way is to do a bank transfer the day the buyer requests the refund. That way the funds will have time to transfer while the item is on its way back to you. Note for future transactions.
