Received Defect because USPS lost package and buyer wouldn't respond to my messages.

Long story short, I sold an item and shipped same day via USPS First Class around a month and a half ago. The item never made it to the final destination or wasn't scanned at the final destination (idk what happened to it). The buyer opened a claim saying they didn't receive the item to which I responded not once BUT TWICE asking the buyer to check with his local post office and verify that they didn't have the item. I told them if they would check and the post office said they didn't have it then I would gladly issue a full refund. Never got a response and eventually eBay closed the claim and auto-refunded their money leaving me out $30 bucks a defect when the buyer couldn't even be bothered to respond to my messages. Is there anything I can do to request the defect to be removed in this case? Tried the phones but couldn't get a live person and the remove defect button wouldn't work. It makes me mad because I would be glad to work out any issues if communication was actually had.  Any insight would be appreciated.

** EDIT: I did contact my local post office and was recommended to encourage the buyer to ask his local post office.
