Item Location

This seems to be  misleading information as in many cases I've found that when it states that the item is in my country, it actually takes a long time to come from some offshore location, usually China. So, I must conclude that the seller is lying in order to get the sale based on being 'local'.

This is not acceptable. Ebay might as well delete that dialog box.

This has been a pet peeve of mine on eBay for a long time.  I've even had cases where I was overcharged because of this, due to the wrong currency conversion rate.

To me this crossed into consumer fraud and eBay allowing it makes eBay responsible.

Item Location

Since you are an Australian buyer, and your seller lists the item location as Australia, it appears your transaction took place on ebay.com.au. Is that correct? If so, you'll want to post this comment for discussion on the eBay Australia discussion boards.

On ebay.com, it is a policy violation to misrepresent the item location. I know ebay.co.uk has recently (March or April) begun a crackdown on these violations. If you post this thread on the eBay Australia discussion boards, you'll have a better chance of what your fellow countrymen have experienced in this regard. Maybe someone there can give you some advice on how to proceed.

Good luck in your quest!

You are right, it is not acceptable ... beside being a problem with shipping delays, buyers also see that domestic address and understand that if a return is needed for a remorse reason, then it is a domestic return.

But, in general, if the package arrives at the buyer's location within the time-frame of the listing, then I don't know why the buyer would care where the package came from.

Here are some other things:

  • It is against eBay's Item Location Policy
  • If it ships from a dramatically different location than advertised (e.g., China, when declaring it is domestic), it is eligible for a Not as Described claim since the shipping location is considered part of the item description ... this is mostly due to the implied return location (see this post from Trinton, an eBay employee).   But, if a buyer is objecting, my guess is that they are objecting to the longer than anticipated shipping times, and the buyer should just go ahead and file an INR claim.
  • The seller deserves a negative from you.
  • The listing should be reported by you, though I believe that eBay software robots are now observing shipping origins and delays of listings and automatically addressing this listing practice.
