So I'm selling a small kitchen appliance that I bought years ago and never opened. It arrived to me in it's own package wrapped in thin plastic with the labels attached to it. I now understand why it arrived like that. The dimensions of the packaging are uncommon and finding a box large enough that's not going to kill me in shipping cost is next to impossible.
So when I sell it, I'm wondering if I can do the same thing? If I wrap the box in plastic and attach a label to it, will FedEx accept it? And what sort of plastic should I use to ship? Google gave me confusing answers.

1. I have used brown paper you can get on a roll, wrap it like a Christmas gift with tape around all sides to prevent a rip from removing the paper and label.
2. I have simply made a new box to fit over the manufacturers box with NO airspace, cut down from a larger one. You don't have to get a bigger box then fill in the gaps, uses scissors, tape measurer, etc. to simply form a box around the item box.

I frequently have put manufacturer boxes inside very large poly mailers and taped to conform to the package. FedEx has always accepted them.

Yes you can... BUT remember if the label can get ripped off then you have a problem...so good heavy plastic wrap..and well attached....

Some buyers may not like that, me I do not care as long as my item arrives safe. My boyfriend (may he RIP) once received an item like that and he was furious. He wanted to leave the seller negative FB, which I was able to talk him out of it, but he stopped buying on eBay for that reason.
Just an little FYI

Those appliance boxes are not meant for shipping - they're not strong enough. They're made for the item to be palletized, not individually shipped. What's going to happen to the appliance inside the box when a 50 pound package falls 10 feet off a conveyor belt and lands on your box?
Get a box that is 2-3 inches larger on all sides, fill with peanuts or other void filler.

Just to update, it sold surprisingly fast and wound up making my own box like this just to get it out in time. I went with UPS and they accepted it. Taped and all. I have to wait a few days to see if it got there in one piece.
