I used FedEx Smartpost to save a few dollars on shipping but item (Metal Coleman Cooler) arrived damaged at buyers location. I have documented photos of no damage before...he has photos of damage upon receipt. He filed a return claim, Ebay ultimately honored it and refunded all his money. I filed a FedEx Smartpost Damage claim with Ebay and am waiting in limbo. After doing some research online and on this EBay Community Forum site and spending 38 minutes on the phone with 7 different departments at EBay, I have found out that my cliam will be denied by FedEx becaused they handed it off to USPS for final delivery and it was not listed as "Unable to Deliver - Damaged" on the Fedex tracking.
So Fedex will point the finger at USPS, USPS will point the finger at FedEx, EBay says it is a FedEx decision even though you buy the Postage and Insurance through Ebay and somewhere in a little over 4 weeks you will get your decision.........DENIED DAMAGE CLAIM!!!
My $125 lesson learned........DON'T EVER USE FEDEX SMARTPOST...unless it is something that costs little or nothing and you want to risk it or is pretty much undamagable like a rock or a tennis ball or ??
What a joke! A Class Action Lawsuit waiting to happen if I ever saw one! Take your money for insurance...never ever pay a claim!!
Want to read more? Search Smartpost Damage Claim on this forum. (But Ebay shut that thread down so no more posting on that one......wonder why?????

Lithium, not eBay, shuts down some older threads when they've been reported. Other threads on SmartPost are still able to be responded to.
Many here have stated that SmartPost/USPS claims are very hard to win. First, unless you use your own FedEx account, because eBay is the account holder. Second, FedEx claims USPS did the damage while USPS claims FedEx did the damage.

FedEx will NEVER have a damage scan from FedEx.
We got a pallet of SmartPost at our Post Office that was leaking what turned out to be shelf stable Rice Milk. The clerk even documented with her phone the puddle inside the FedEx truck and trail into the Post Office. The box was loaded on the pallet that way as the gaping hole in the side of the box wasn't even on the outer side of the stack. When she went on-line the FedEx scan had no record of the damage.

^^This.
I've never assumed SmartPost insured against damage ... and I've had enough damage issues with FedEx Ground to know that it is a risk. That said, I still use the service from time to time if the cost-to-risk reward is worth it.
